GRADUATE STORY: Meet Jess Robertson

When Jess first visited CMA at an Open Day in 2014, she decided to follow her passion and take the first step towards her beauty career.

One year on, Jess graduated from CMA with a Diploma of Beauty Therapy and is now the proud owner of her very own beauty salon, Bello Beauty.

What led you to the beauty industry?
I’ve always been interested in beauty but never thought I would go down this track. I’ve always wanted to own my own business and do something I enjoy. I wanted to do something where I could work from home when I have children, as I can’t wait to be a mum!
The beauty industry fits that to a T.

What were you doing prior to studying at CMA?
Prior to CMA I was working a few casual jobs in customer service and helping my Dad on the farm.

What do you love most about the industry?
The beauty industry is a lot harder than what people think. It involves long hours, physical work and you’re on your feet all day. I absolutely love it though, because it’s such a ‘feel good job.’ I love the feeling when you make someone’s day because you’ve reshaped their eyebrows or done their wedding makeup. It’s amazing to make people look and feel good, and I’ve met some amazing people.

Where are you now?
I graduated from CMA in December 2015. Less than a year later, I now have my own salon that is getting busier everyday. Prior to having my salon and whilst still studying at CMA, I started my own mobile beauty business. I would pamper clients in the comfort of their own home, and only offer what I had been deemed competent in. Then the opportunity came up to buy a business down the main street of Yass. I couldn’t be happier with it.

Jess took her journey in Beauty Therapy alongside her Mum, Michele, who now works with Jess in the salon…

Tell us about a day in the life of Bello Beauty
Jess starts the day by listening to voice messages and returning phone calls. Michele will come in before her first appointment and get her room set up, and place the towels in the towel warmer ready for the day. Doors open at 9:30am and from then on we’re busy with client appointments, phone calls, walk-ins, and updating our Facebook page. Jess loves waxing brows, tinting, manicures, eyelash extensions and spray tans. Michele enjoys massaging, facials and pedicures.

Why did you choose to study at CMA?
I chose to study at CMA because they are good at what they do, and it was such a modern, fun and welcoming environment. All the staff and trainers are truly amazing people who love what they do, and pass their passion onto the students.

What was the best aspect of the course?
The best aspect was meeting new people, and learning new skills that I will have for life. Another best part was all the fun days we had at CMA, such as Melbourne Cup day, etc.

How has your life changed after graduating from CMA?
My life has changed so much since graduating CMA. I’m only 21 and I now own a salon. I’m very proud of what I have achieved in this short amount of time and I couldn’t have done it without CMA!
